The one
requirement for Confederate 730 notes was that a date was to be
applied by the agent before the note was paid out. We have
sorted these notes by Person/Date and Place/Date; but, until
now, no one has saved them by Date Only. Most of
these dates are manuscript yet a few are found as stamped dates.
The ink used for manuscript dates is most often Brown in
various shades; but, you can find the occasional Red, Blue and
Blue-Black colors as well. Date stamps are shown in Black,
Orange, Red-Orange and Blue colors. A variety of Issued
Dates are imaged on here sorted by Month, Day and Year.
The earliest Issued Date in this sample is August 8, 1862
and the latest Issued Date is January 19, 1865. If you
have a Date Only not illustrated and would like us to include it
please contact Roger Adamek or Crutch Williams.
These stamps are
found on the obverse of 730 interest notes.
They are also found on a wide variety of other CSA demand
(Type) notes.

This date is also found on the front of this note.
In other words, it is the Registry Date. The
question here is, was this date applied the day this note
was Paid Out by a Clerk in Richmond; or, was it applied by
a Collector sometime on or after January 1st, 1863, who
was calculating an Interest from Date to remind him what
date to figure interest from? I personally believe
it would be a Paid Out or Issued Date by a Clerk in some
department in Richmond who had been told to date any 730
he paid out. He would have no reason to check the
date on the front of a 730 note. He would only take
the time to turn it over and date it and pass it to the
person he was paying. Obviously, there is no way to
actually know; but, this is a Date Only
without any doubt and it takes its place at the top of
this list as the first reported June! July
