The one requirement for Confederate 730 notes was that a date was to be applied by the agent before the note was paid out.  We have sorted these notes by Person/Date and Place/Date; but, until now, no one has saved them by Date Only.   Most of these dates are manuscript yet a few are found as stamped dates.  The ink used for manuscript dates is most often Brown in various shades; but, you can find the occasional Red, Blue and Blue-Black colors as well.  Date stamps are shown in Black, Orange, Red-Orange and Blue colors.  A variety of Issued Dates are imaged on here sorted by Month, Day and Year.  The earliest Issued Date in this sample is August 8, 1862 and the latest Issued Date is January 19, 1865.  If you have a Date Only not illustrated and would like us to include it please contact Roger Adamek or Crutch Williams.

Red Date Stamp
These stamps are found on the obverse of 730 interest notes.
They are also found on a wide variety of other CSA demand (Type) notes.

This date is also found on the front of this note.  In other words, it is the Registry Date.  The question here is, was this date applied the day this note was Paid Out by a Clerk in Richmond; or, was it applied by a Collector sometime on or after January 1st, 1863, who was calculating an Interest from Date to remind him what date to figure interest from?  I personally believe it would be a Paid Out or Issued Date by a Clerk in some department in Richmond who had been told to date any 730 he paid out.  He would have no reason to check the date on the front of a 730 note.  He would only take the time to turn it over and date it and pass it to the person he was paying.  Obviously, there is no way to actually know; but, this is a Date Only without any doubt and it takes its place at the top of this list as the first reported June!

Red Date Stamp
This section will be expanded as more images come in
Found on 730 Notes

1862   *   1863

There has been a great deal of discussion regarding the reasoning behind the application of Red Date Stamps to various types of notes over the years.  On 730 Trains (T39/40) they are always found on the obverse above the right serial number & plate letter.  On the few Hoers (T41) they have been seen on, the stamp is located above the date at upper right.  Are they Re-Issue Dates; Are they Validation Dates attesting to a note's genuineness; or, are they a combination of both Re-Issue and Validation when found on 730 notes?  Regardless of your opinion, Red Date Stamps are scarce and are a great addition to any collection of Confederate 730 notes.

Two Varieties of 91262 Stamp
RDS62_091262_2Var
T39 H&L

If you were to call a Red Date Stamp common, I suppose it would be this one - 91262.  It is found on a number of different Type notes and on a large quantity of Hoyer & Ludwig T39 Trains.  There was a small horde of well over 100+ H&L Trains with this stamp that surfaced over 15 years ago and all were disbursed quickly.  I have shown this image to illustrate that there were at least two different hand stamps used to date reissued notes.  I believe it is also found on a few other odd Trains.  I am not aware of it being found on a Hoer as I write this text.

Please report any dates not illustrated and provide an image of the entire front of the note at 100% x 200dpi.  Thanks, Crutch

The February 23, 1863 Red Date Stamp on T39 above is the first Vertical positioned Red Date Stamp found and reported on a 1862 730 Interest Hundred.  The February 11, 1863 on T40 imaged above is the only known example on 730 Note where the date is positioned above the Serial Number.  The standard was to put the Red Date in the area above the Plate Letter A.  There would of course with the same person applying the stamp on that date, as would be the same case with the Feb 23rd date.  These two are just further example of New Variations of Theme that can still be found on these fascinating 730 Interest Hundreds.

The May and June 1863 Red Date Stamps are known on other 1861 Type notes; however, none have yet to be reported for the T39/40 Trains & T41 Hoer 1862 730 Interest Hundred Notes.  Keep your eyes open.  Surely there are more new discoveries to be made!
